SPORTS
In June 1997,
The Sporting News declared, "The Best Sports City in 1997 is Denver,
where the sun shines 310 days a year and the sports possibilities are
cloudless year-round.... Denver comes together as a unique setting for
sports of all kinds. In addition to the Broncos, Boulder Buffs, Nuggets,
Avalanche and Rockies, there is every kind of participatory opportunity
imaginable."
Professional
Teams
Denver
Broncos (NFL)
Since 1960, the Denver Broncos have grown into a team
that is followed by legions of fans throughout the Rocky Mountain
region, United States and the world. An original franchise of the
American Football League, the club reached the National Football League's
pinnacle by capturing its first World Championship by virtue of a
31-24 victory over the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. One
year later the team was able to follow-up on the previous year's feat
by winning it's second title.
Colorado
Rockies (MLB)
Baseball at a mile-high altitude wasn't necessarily
meant to be figured out; it was meant to be enjoyed, decried or shrugged
at! The Colorado Rockies have been entertaining fans Coors Field,
the first of the "throwback" stadiums, since 1993.
Denver
Nuggets (NBA)
The Denver Nuggets franchise traces its origins to
1967-68 in the American Basketball Association. A stable ABA franchise
for nine years, Denver carried its winning ways into the NBA when
the two leagues merged in 1976. Today, Carmelo Anthony leads the Nuggets
into an exciting new era!
Colorado
Avalanche (NHL)
Since coming to Denver in 1996, the former Quebec
Nordiques have won over a fanatical fan base, winning the Stanley
Cup in 1996 and 2001.
Colorado
Rapids (MLS)
The state of Colorado welcomed a brand new franchise
to its sporting landscape on October 17, 1995 when the Colorado Rapids
were named as one of Major League Soccer’s original 10 franchises.
Colorado
Mammoth (NLL)
The Colorado Mammoth brought professional Lacrosse
to Denver on January 3, 2003. NLL teams each play a 16-game regular
season schedule (eight home & eight away) that begins in December
and runs through April, followed by the Champion’s Cup Playoffs.
Colorado
Springs Sky Sox (AAA Baseball)
The Sky Sox are the
Colorado Rockies' AAA affiliate, playing their home games at Security
Service Field in Colorado Springs.
